Since mid 1996 W3C SGML (now renamed XML) Working Group had been developing a system for defining, validating, and sharing document formats on the Web.
W3C issued XML 1.0 as a Recommendation on the 10th of February 1998.
It is the first in a series of standards.
Document Object Model Level 1 (DOM);
Mathematical Markup Language (MathML) 1.01;
Associating Style Sheets with XML documents;
Resource Description Framework (RDF);
Synchronised Multimedia Integration Language (SMIL) 1.0;

Much work remains to be done
XML Schema (description of structures and data types);
XHTML: extensible HTML-A Reformulation of HTML 4.0 in XML 1.0;
XPath: addressing parts of an XML document;
XSLT: transforming XML documents for use with XSL;
XSL: extensible stylesheet language;
SVG: scalable vector graphics;
XLink: XML Linking Language;
XPointer: XML Pointer Language;
XML Schema: define and describe a class of XML documents.
